I’m officially sick of all this Arafat talk.
Arafat has leukemia. Arafat has alzheimers. Arafat has stomach cancer. Arafat has irritable bowel syndrome. Arafat has progeria. Arafat has an ingrown toenail.
Maybe Arafat has nothing and he just wanted to get out of the country.
In any case, his gold digging wife finally makes an appearance after eating a bit too much foi gras in Paris for the past four years.
Hadag Nahash in Rolling Stone
Mad props to Hadag Nahash for making it to Rolling Stone, but why, oh why does every freaking article need to have that whole “conflict” thing mentioned? It’s tiring. Yes, Hadag Nahash sing about policitics, but they also sing about sex, drugs and bamba.
Kol Zeh Jazz!
Get your tap shoes tapping, jazz hands waving and start building your tolerance for an Israeli tendency for overacting and melodrama and catch the Tel Aviv production of Chicago.
Jazz!
Arafat off to the city of lovers.
Is tonight Arafat’s big night?
Ha’aretz is reporting that Arafat’s condition has worsened that he is unconscious.
Jpost has more.
ADL ALERT! ADL ALERT! ADL ALERT!
Now that the Queer Eye dudes are over and more than enough rides have been pimped it’s time for the Jews to be whored and overexposed on Television. Yay!
E! Television presents “JAP Squad,” a show due to appear on the E! Television owned Style Network.
The NY Post reports:
A casting call for a cable makeover show about “Jewish American Princesses” in New York City has a lot people in a schvitz.
The show’s tentative title, “JAP Squad,” made the rounds last week in an email from an E! Network casting executive who was looking for participants to appear on the show.
The project is in the works for The Style Network, a sister channel of the E! Network.
“We’re casting a show in N.Y., filmed in N.Y., called ‘JAP Squad,’ ” the e-mail read.
“I know, it’s an awful name. [But] I need girls who know where to go in NYC for the best deals, who know the nail salons, the bakeries, the spas, the nice places, too. If you know people who might be interested, can you please forward them to me?”
Network officials described the project as a makeover show along the lines of “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” — but with women.
The ADL chimes in:
The email angered several recipients who say the term “JAP” is demeaning and derogatory. A network official confirmed that the show was in development, but said “JAP Squad” would not be the final title. “Style is developing a pilot — that’s not the title,” an E! Network spokeswoman said. “We’re looking to cast a broad range of style-conscious women.” The term “JAP” usually denotes a materialistic, spoiled young woman.
A prominent official at the Anti-Defamation League told The Post that “JAP” is a horrible word to use in the title of a television show. “The term is used to invoke an image,” said Caryl Stern, the Jewish group’s associate national director. “It is a stereotyped image and no one uses that term for any other purpose,” said Stern. “I would hope that the channel would choose to name its show something else,” she said.
Gaza Shmaza
While I understand the importance of what happened this evening on the political front my mind is elsewhere. Politics and other goodies will have to wait until tomorrow.
Email from my Mother:
Hi Harry, Molly was put to rest yesterday at 2:00 PM. She was lying on her special pillow when Dr. Drring administered the drugs. I was petting her at time time and she went peacefully. Katie and Ellie don’t seem to miss her or think anything is any different. Katie is still the same pain in the ass and Ellie continues to sneak onto the couch in the den. We will be in touch. Love, Mom
I was ten years old when we adopted Molly. My sister named her after a character from the the movie Annie. She wasn’t the nicest cat. We had a bit of a falling out about ten years ago but have since reconciled. She kept to herself, spending her entire life sitting on a pillow.
For the record Katie and Ellie are cats as well. Katie is about 17 years old, deaf and was named after a character from the comic book Power Pack. I adopted Elie in college and his full name is Eliezer Chaim Ze’ev.
Ashlee’s story
Absolutely priceless. I feel blessed that my SNL-deprived eyes were able to bare witness to the monstrosity that was Ashlee Simpson’s “performance” on Saturday Night Live because of this wonderful invention called the “world wide web.”
So Ashlee gets caught lip-synching and she has the gall to blame her band for “playing the wrong song.” Uh…Don’t you rehearse for your SNL performance ALL WEEK? How is it that the entire band were out of the loop, but you weren’t Ashlee? And what was up with that dance? Where the hell did that come from? Who are you?
You are nothing more than a faux-punk contrived pop tart! Shame on you!
The disaster
The apology
Long live the internet!
Two things
Inspired by his week long fling filling in for me while I was gone, the always mysterious “B” has returned blogging at Not Another Israel Blog.
Let’s hope he sustains it longer than he did last time.
In other news, Jamye informs me that a former schoolmate of ours was arrested for soliciting a 13 year-old-girl via Yahoo Instant Messenger. He arranged to pick her up in Ronkonkoma, have sex with her in his Manhattan apartment and then give her a ride back to Long Island. I also learned that Jamye went to the eighth grade dance with him. Interesting. Needless to say, shame on you Steven Lever. Get help you sick, sick man.
Refuse this, bitch
We are at a historical turning point in Israel’s history. We are witnessing the beginning of the inevitable fragmentation of the Likud party.
I sometimes forget how different Tel Aviv and Jerusalem are. In Jerusalem all you see is posters stating “The People with Gush Katif” and “Sharon is dividing the country” whereas in Tel Aviv there are banners proclaiming “We must leave Gaza now.” Disengagement undoubtedly is a divisive issue. We have an unique opportunity for the first time to control our own destiny and the Israeli government would be fools not to monopolize on it. I believe that the decision to disengage from Gaza must be brought to the people. And if so, I believe that the people will support disengagement.
Now, let’s talk about refusers. Refusers on the both the left and the right threaten democracy. There are however, major differences in these two movements, and while one is fringe, the other has the potential to be incredibly damaging to the nation. The left wingers are just a nuisance in the public eye. Although many of them have illusions of grandeur, the only people who give them respect are the left wing audiences they address at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and Berkeley. There are currently only 628 people who have signed the refusers petition. They remain a teeny tiny fraction of those who serve in the reserves and active duty and they have no influence on the political landscape.
The concept of religious refusers is not yet a fact. We have Rabbis telling soldiers that it’s ok to refuse an order to uproot Jews from their home but obviously we haven’t seen if religious soldiers will indeed listen. We are assuming a couple of things. First off, that all religious soldiers are right wing and secondly that the word of their Rabbis are more important and influential than their commanders and their loyalty to the state. Admittingly, most probably are right of center but we can’t make assumptions, can we?. I do know moderate, centrist and left wing religious folk, although I know them not to be the majority. I’m no fool. There are some positive signs though. Leaders of The Religious Kibbutz movement released a statement the other day:
“The leadership of The Kibbutz Hadati categorically rejects to the calls made to IDF soldiers to refuse orders from their commanders. We view the unity of the IDF as a crucial element for our existence in Israel. We call on the rabbis of the national religious camp and the leadership not to involve the Israel Defense Forces, our sons and students who serve in the army in this argument, even if these soldiers are convinced that the implementation of the disengagement plan is a grave and dangerous event.
A group of religious soldiers and officers have also responded to calls from the Rabbis by signing a petition stating their intention to obey orders “to evacuate settlements even though many of them oppose the disengagement plan.”
We are young religious soldiers and officers, in the regular army and reserves, yeshiva and pre-military yeshiva graduates, who want to emphasize… if the government of Israel decides to evacuate settlements, we will carry out the orders with pain and sorrow. But it is clear to us that we must carry out the orders… We oppose refusal, we also oppose the dangerous attempts by borderline groups to threaten and harm the soldiers, fighters, and commanders in the IDF who carry out the orders…” the letter said.
We can’t underestimate the power of the Rabbis though. Those making statements are heavy hitters, not Eilat’s chief Rabbi but rather highly influential leaders many who have up until now condemned refusal but now support it. The worst offender is former chief Rabbi
If the people support disengagement and the time comes for the army to disengage from Gaza and the settlements there are indeed uprooted, I hope that the people will leave peacefully and avoid confrontation with the army. I understand that many soldiers will indeed be place in a precarious position, but I hope that they rise to the occasion. Those who don’t and refuse to obey orders….Well, I’m sure there is plenty of room in the IDF jails. They should place them with the left wing refusers so they can commiserate together and discuss their anti-democratic actions while eating overcooked shnitzel.
