June 26, 2005 TVFH Podcast and Podcast 411 interview!

Our new podcast is finally up. It was actually recorded a few days ago but I’ve been pretty busy with work. Sorry for the delay. In other news, our interview with Rob from Podcast 411 went up today and its a hoot! We spoke to Rob for about an hour and a half and the interview is about fifteen minutes, so I have to say I’m quite impressed with his editing skills. But he did edit out something important. I heaped praised upon all that is Podcast411 and not a nary word of my praise was kept. Don’t be so humble Rob!

You can access the interview via the Podcast 411 website or this direct MP3 link.

Also, you can now access our latest podcast as well as past podcasts on our brand new Pupu player located on the left bar of the website.

Israeli police ruin Megadeth concert

It was a long night. Brimstone and hell aside, the Metalist Festival was a pretty comical experience. Apparently I was underdressed as I chose to wear my “This is what a radical feminist looks like” t-shirt rather than a shirt featuring a) a skull b) the name of a death metal band or c) Satan.

Dan and I arrived at about 7:00, we called CK and Laya of Jewlicious but - being that they are as unmetal as can be - they had already left. Guess hippyfests are more their speed.

The venue absolutely sucked. First of all, the stage was set up on top of a hill, so if you weren’t near the front there was no way you could see the stage. They had screens but if I wanted that experience I could have bought a Megadeth dvd. It was also way too small to hold the crowd. The standing room in front of the stage was way far too narrow to hold the enthusiastic crowd.

Megadeth wasn’t scheduled to come on until 1:00 am, so we had to sit through a myriad of thrash metal bands, the best being Germany’s Destruction. The lead singer had the greatest lines ever. We couldn’t wait for the songs to end just so we could hear another great statement. He used the word “awesome” on many occasions, which is fairly undemonic and non-metal. His greatest line was “It doesn’t matter if you listen to heavy metal, death metal or thrash! We are a big family! United under the banner of metal!!!”

It really doesn’t get better than that.

Killing time wasn’t so bad. We kept ourselves busy. I had a near violent episode with a missionary, but you’ll have to read Dan’s blog for that story and a more philosophical take on the festival.

Megadeth finally came on at about 1:40 a.m. It was late, but this is what we were waiting for. After four songs, Dave Mustaine said, “I’ve been told that we need to stop the show for five minutes. There are some safety concerns.”

At this point, a rather cantankerous Israeli guy from the production company or the police (it wasn’t clear) told the crowd that the barrier between the stage and the crowd had broken and needs to be replaced. He then ordered everyone to take a step back. He was kind of a dick about it so the crowd didn’t move. A few minutes later a different guy came up and said the barrier needs to be fixed, so please take two steps back. The crowd finally complied, but after about 20-25 minutes it became apparent to us that this concert wasn’t continuing, so we split, fearing a simultaneous mass exodus. So the police shut it down. It was total bullshit. The tickets were about 40 bucks each, which in America may not seem like a lot of money, but it is here. Not only that, people waited for eight hours to see Megadeth. I had complimentary tickets, but if I didn’t, I would demand my money back. The police are claiming that they had a promise from the promoter that the show would end at 2:00 a.m. If this is true (which it looks like it might be) then the promoter fucked over everyone by not keeping to the concert schedule. If the case was that the safety of the audience was really an issue then the police should have had more foresight and had more than the ten uniformed cops I saw there. Its a fucking metal show. The crowd is going to get fairly rowdy. Now prepare for it. That said, it was a good crowd. There wasn’t anything nefarious or sinister about it. It was just a bunch of good kids who love metal and wanted their ears to bleed. The only thing left bleeding now is their wallets.

Another issue here is how this is going to affect the potential visits of international acts in the future. Who the hell is going to want to perform here if this is what musicians can expect? Most bands have to take a huge paycut to play here. No band comes here expecting a profit. It looks like the people who attended last night’s show aren’t going to be the only ones affected by this.

So the question is, if the police and the promoters aren’t going to prepare for these events in the proper way, why have them at all?

I have a hot date tonight…

No, not with the lovely Ziva, but with brimstone and fire.

A few short hours from now I’ll be heading out to see Megadeth at the Metalist festival at Palmachim beach. I’m going with Mr. Jewschool himself and will be meeting up with the Jewlicious crew. Full update tomorrow.

Heavy Shtetl baby!

Thank you for not grabbing Ziva’s ass Christian Slater!

We talk about this on our latest podcast but I wouldn’t want my non-podcast listening audience to be deprived of our run-in with Jason ‘J.D.’ Dean himself.

So there we were. Making our way up and down the streets of Hell’s Kitchen looking for parking. It seems that everytime we are in NY the parking laws change and we struggle to make sense of the signs. We pull up to a place where we think we can park. Ziva hops out of the car and says to two guys sitting on the porch, “Is it OK to park here?” First guy says “After seven it’s fine.” Second guy follows up with “Yeah, and you only have to wait fifteen minutes!” Ziva hops back into the car and tells me “The guy on the porch said its OK to park here. And he was Christian Slater.” Whoah! So we stood next to Christian Slater for fifteen minutes. It was awkward. Now I’m not one to get starstruck, but shit! This dude was arrested the previous night uptown for groping some chick.

I finally said to him “Gleaming the Cube” and “Pump Up the Volume” defined me as a teenager. No I didn’t. I just stood there and chit chatted with Ziva in Hebrew so Christian Slater wouldn’t understand.

State of the Podcast and Blog

Hey everybody. Things have been slow around here. As I mentioned in the previous entry we were abroad a couple of weeks. Returning is always a bitch. Our trips to the states are always exhausting and when we return, we are in a desperate need for a vacation. It always takes us a couple of weeks to get our groove back. Jetlag fucks me up. A combination of the weather changes and the long travel takes its toll on my arthritis. I’m feeling quite gimpy right now. Anyway, enough about me. I’ve heard a lot of complaints that I’ve been ignoring my blog and focusing primarily on my podcast. This is true. Guilty as charged. Does this mean I intend to abandon my blog? Absolutely not. My blog shall return to past glory in due time. I’ve been lazy and just need to put up a box on my sidebar featuring the latest podcast. Once I do that (hopefully this week) blogging will resume hardcore. Promise.

We are totally stoked about the feedback we have been receiving regarding the podcast. Majority of you are awesome and its always a pleasure to read the positive comments on Podcast Alley. So thank you for that.

I’m totally addicted to Podcasting these days. I wish there was more time in the day to listen to all of the podcasts I listen to.

A few of my favorites:

The PK & J Show - A progressive Dynamic duo with great chemistry from Columbus, Ohio Paul and Jeanette talk about life, politics and, er, “Who’s the Boss.”

Podcast 411 - A podcast about podcasts, Rob interviews the movers and shakers of the podcast community. This podcast has introduced me to a plethora of new podcasts. Check out Rob’s recent interview with the Podfather himself, Adam Curry. He even scored an interview with former VP candidate John Edwards. This kid is going places! We’ll be appearing on the show shortly! His site is also an incredible resource for podcast information and tutorials. He is unstoppable.

American Copywriter - I stumbled across this podcast at episode three and haven’t stopped listening since. Two copywriters discuss, among other things, pop culture and advertising. It’s an incredibly interesting look into the world of advertising and damn funny to boot.

The Twisted Pickle - Yeah, this one is definitely not for everyone. It’s sick and disturbing and I love it. I also love the fact that he hides his podcasting from his wife.

Rock and Roll Geek Show - Pretty self-explanatory. A guy loves rock and roll. He talks about his love of rock, interviews bands and plays music. If you can’t handle the rock, you shouldn’t be listening.

Israellycool - Aussie Israeli “Dave L” of the popular Israel-based blog has started a podcast. It’s irreverent, funny and incredibly entertaining. And it’s not just about Israel. So go listen. Now.

Zion B’Ayin - This just may be the absolute best podcast out there. This guy Harry loves music and decided to start a podcast strictly dedicated to Israeli indie rock performed in English! Yeah, hubris was never a problem with me before.

Eatfeed - A must listen podcast for foodies.

Hometown Tales - Urban legend junky? This show is for you. The podcast version of a public access show about ghosts, legends, monsters and more!

I’m back

Yowzas! Been a long time folks. We just returned from a two week jaunt of the states. USA! USA! We have a shitload to talk about and hopefully will have a podcast up tomorrow night. The flight was horrible and I wish I could have the two hours I spent watching “Be Cool” back.

Whoring for votes at Podcast Alley

Yesterday we celebrated our fourth wedding anniversary. Mazal Tov to us. Yay!
As a present, we’d really appreciate if you would head on over to Podcast Alley and vote for us. They reset the voting at the beginning of every month and although it’s bullshit and means nothing in the scheme of things, it gives our show a lot more exposure.
