July 24, 2005 TVFH Podcast - It’s all about the hummous

Yes, yes. I know. I’m a terrible person. After several empty promises we’re finally back. In our fifteenth podcast we discuss disengagement, elevator anxieties, hummus, Arab sweets and parental podcast listeners. I’ve been getting a lot of emails about the music I’ve been playing at the end of the shows. So I’m going to start letting you guys know what we’re playing. This week we feature “Girlfriend,” the new single by Israel’s undisputed power pop king Shy Nobleman. Oh, and if you are interested in hearing more Israeli indie rock performed in English, please check out my other blog and podcast, Zion B’ayin.

Thanks for the concern

Do not fret!

Sorry for the lack of podcastization. We’ve taken a week off due to uncontrollable circumstances but we’ll make our triumphant return on Friday!

Oh Natalie!

Natalie Portman’s world view was radically changed during a few years ago in Israel according to this interview in Newsweek. The program she is involved with has nothing to do with Israel but is indeed a noble one - microfinancing loans for poor women in developing nations.

Natalie on getting involved:

A few years ago I had a very personal experience, one that I don’t wish to share publicly, with political unrest in Israel. And it made me want to get involved in a productive way, not in a political finger-pointing way. My way of looking at the world, as an actress, is to try to put yourself in everyone’s shoes.

Natalie on Israel:

It’s a very tough time, but I think people are more hopeful than I’ve seen them in the past. Sharon surprised me in ways I did not expect. Although I don’t know if all the reasons behind the Gaza pullout are as idealistic as we might like to think, at the same time I don’t really care why they’re doing it as long as they’re doing it. If they didn’t do it, Israel won’t be a Jewish state in 10 years.

Natalie on her shaved head:

It’s totally fine. But I got pulled over at the tunnel the other night in New York. I’ve never had that happen to me before. It’s supposedly random. They pulled me over at the Midtown Tunnel. My registration was expired because I had been out of town, and it was my first day back. I’d been in Israel and Berlin for the shooting. They wouldn’t let me go in. But he said to take the bridge instead. And I didn’t understand that logic. If you’re a suspect, don’t take the tunnel take the bridge?

Harry on Natalie:

I think her shaved head is hot.

‘The View from Here’ on NRG

Big up to NRG’s Hanan Cohen for writing (Hebrew link) such nice things about several Israeli bloggers who blog in English in his Internet column. He Hanan, check out my other blog and podcast, Zion B’Ayin!

He had this to say about ‘The View from Here’:

Harry and Ziva are a young couple who live in Modiin. They have sense of a humor and they have a weekly podcast. Their great podcast begins with a guitarist version of Hatikvah (Israel’s national anthem). They also speak about their lives here in Israel to their audience around the world. Fun to listen to and fun to read.

I’ll take it!

UPDATE: Lisa over at “On the Face” writes:

I’ll avoid the blow-by-blow translation, since it’s late and I’m far too lazy, and just give you the general idea. It seems that last month a columnist for Ma’ariv wrote an article complaining that there are no good Israeli blogs, the kind that discuss politics and society instead of “pee pee and kaki.” In response, Hanan Cohen wrote the piece I linked to. According to Cohen, the best Israeli blogs are written in English. True, he admits, it’s not so easy for Hebrew speakers to read in English, but “Anglo Saxon” blogs frequently offer “surprises and wisdom.” He explains that all of the bloggers have blogrolls, so it’s easy to click through to lots more surprising and wise Anglo-Israeli writers.

The blogs specifically mentioned - and summarized - in the article are:

Moi (duh) (Quote: “I’m not sure what she does for a living, but she seems to move around this area a lot so maybe she’s a journalist.”)

Dutchblog Israel (Quote: “Writes in English and Dutch. It seems that most of his readers are Dutch, and he feels the need to explain ‘what’s going on here’ to them.”)

Balagan (Quote: “A week ago she got stopped at the Knesset, where she works, because she was wearing orange shoes. The security guards thought she was making an anti-disengagement statement. She is pro-disengagement.”)

The View From Here (Quote: “Harry and Ziva are a young couple who live in Modi’in. They have a sense of humour, and they have a weekly podcast!”)

Orthodox Anarchist (Quote: “Ever heard of an Orthodox anarchist? There’s one living in Jerusalem, and based on his blog he’s a super cool dude.”)

Ari Lives in Israel (Quote: “A leftist asshole. (the kind I like).”)

Five Years Later (Quote: “She shares very personal feelings that make me…feel alternately like a participant and a voyeur.”)

Israelity (Quote: “A group blog that describes life in Israel and tries to avoid politics. Lovely writing.”)

I have to admit, I’m pretty chuffed.

The Genders on Daily Source Code

A song by Israeli sleaze rockers The Genders was featured on yesterday’s Daily Source Code. The song, “When I Grow Up (I Wanna be a Fucking Stoner)was played towards the end of the show. Unfortunately, Adam Curry did not mention the name of the band (for shame!). One can only assume it’s because it didn’t know it. Hopefully, this great injustice will be rectified on today’s show.

Please email Adam (podsafe(at)podshow.com) and politely urge him to make mention of the name of the band and to provide a link to their website (thegenders.com).

Do it for Israel!

June 26, 2005 TVFH Podcast - The Prophecy

This is the first of two podcasts we’ll be putting up over the next 24 hours. This edition Harry interviews documentarian and close friend Ron Lipsky. They discuss his new movie, “The Prophecy” and go off on way too many tangents. Run DMC, Chemical Brothers and Perry Ferrel mixed with a charismatic cult-like twentysomething in the holy land does not have the best results. Or does it?
