Summer for me means great pop music. I’m all about pop and have rarely met a hook I didn’t like. I got into a discussion of great power pop with Jessica Hopper, one of the journalists who came on the media trip that I worked on a few weeks ago, said she would send me the Yellow Pills: Prefill (Power Pop Obscure Classics 1978-1982) compilation.
Got it yesterday in the mail (Thanks Jessica!) and spent last night sitting in my backyard taking in the melodic riffage, harmonies and general atmosphere of fun and teenage love.
It’s a bizarro experience hearing all these bands that sound so damn familiar (haven’t I heard that riff before?) yet I’ve never heard of any of them…
Who is this Randy Winburn fellow and why haven’t I heard him before?!?!?!
This collection is a must for all power pop fans…buy it now.
I’ll leave you with a track by a more contemporary power pop band. The aptly titled International Pop Overthrow by one of my favorite bands of all time, Material Issue.
