In a country where it is considered perfectly acceptable to feel up every piece of bread on the shelf before taking something, and everyone dips their hands into the bulk food bins for free meal, does a total lack of understanding of hygiene in food handling really surprise you?
Just be thankful they didn’t serve you someone’s leftover coffee.
What, like when the guy hands you a falafel right after smoking a cigarette? Thta’s not hygienic?
Ever seen how they touch every last bread in the supermarket before taking one?
Who knows what their hands touched earlier….
I disagree with the other comments – this is over the line for a cafe (here or anywhere), and you should get your letter into the hands of the branch manager and the Arcaffe management.
Last time I walked into Arcaffe they had no running water. The time before it was something else. For some reason they are really best at the airport.
I’ve never had the good luck of getting good service at Arcaffe. The service has never been anything but slow and rude. But I come back because I like their almond consonant and the view from the one in Tzomet Alonim in Emek Izrael.
I understand the bread thing that disgusts you, that’s why I pay the extra 6 Shekels for sliced and bagged, though the unsliced bread tastes better.
What is really disgusting is the half eaten olives, thrown back in the barrel. Yuck!
@steve you exaggerate. this is not the status quo in restaurants in Israel.
@Benji That actually improves the flavor. Like Chipotle.
@Mick They ignored my complaint but now whenever someone google Arcaffe and Jerusalem, my post will be on the first page of search results. If someone from Arcaffe contacts me to discuss this I will happily remove the post.
@ezra and most expensive at the airport as well!
@Mia i LOVE the almond crossaint there. That’s why this is so painful.
HA! Just found you on twitter so came to check your blog. I was just thinking I should spread the wealth and give this arcaffe a chance since my $’s have been going to Coffee Bean. I am not even a coffee drinker.. so now it looks like I should stick to what I am used to
Btw – to add to the hygeine conversation – I love to buy salads here, but doesnt it gross you out that on top of the counter at places like Sam Booki and others they have the roasted veggies at SNEEZE LEVEL?
I never thought about the sneeze level in Sanbooki before…now that you mention it…..ew. I will never get a the roasted veggies on my salad again.
I get my coffee exclusively at Gulindo on Shammai these days. Nice people, clean and its good to support a local business.
I have noticed that many Israelis are somewhat cavalier in their attitudes toward hygiene as it relates to food. They, on the other hand, think we’re being uptight if we don’t drink from their bottles or eat from a dish in which they’ve been “double dipping.” An Israeli relative (who shall remain unnamed but gave birth to my husband) got very offended when I asked her not to put a utensil that had been in her mouth back into a shared appetizer at a restaurant. I have actually gotten used to this and normally turn a blind eye, but she had been complaining of a stomach virus only the day before!
It didn’t occur to me that the dish could have been contaminated before it even reached our table. I guess it’s best not to know what goes on in the kitchen of most restaurants here. If we don’t know about it, maybe it won’t affect us? Food for thought…
I am reminded of a book by an Egyptian woman who stayed in Israel for awhile and, among other adventures, worked in the kitchen at the King David Hotel. Her account of cooks picking their noses, etc. is hilarious.
