Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas, along with many collaborators have put together a motivational song that was inspired by Barack Obama’s “Yes We Can” speech following the New Hampshire primary. It features, among others, Common, John Legend, Scarlett Johannson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar and even Ed Kowalczyk of +Live+ (Obama epitomizes “The Beauty of Grey”, huh Ed? ). Oddly enough, there is some young lady uttering the ancient language of the Jews (that would be Hebrew) at the 1:40 mark. Who is that?

The Library of Congress has uploaded over 3000 photos from their archives to Flickr.

From the Library of Congress blog:

The project is beginning somewhat modestly, but we hope to learn a lot from it. Out of some 14 million prints, photographs and other visual materials at the Library of Congress, more than 3,000 photos from two of our most popular collections are being made available on our new Flickr page, to include only images for which no copyright restrictions are known to exist.

The real magic comes when the power of the Flickr community takes over. We want people to tag, comment and make notes on the images, just like any other Flickr photo, which will benefit not only the community but also the collections themselves. For instance, many photos are missing key caption information such as where the photo was taken and who is pictured. If such information is collected via Flickr members, it can potentially enhance the quality of the bibliographic records for the images.

Photo on Flickr.

Being the Jew that I am, I immediately searched for “Jew” and came upon several interesting photos. This photo I believe to mostly likely be a tashlich ceremony on the Brooklyn Bridge.

You see people? Not all of Web 2.0 is a waste of time. We can collaborate together to wonderful things.

I just got back from an unbelievable meal at Sake Bar Hagi, an unassuming Izakaya on 49th street. You wouldn’t expect to find such an authentic joint so close to the always overbearing Times Square. The food was ridiculous. Just amazing. Uber-authentic Japanese food and not a piece of sushi to be found. We chowed down on an absurd amount of yakitori, karaage, udon, and edamame. My favorite dish was probably fried sardines and daikon. However, we wimped out on the yam jelly. Its a texture thing. All the food was washed down with copious amounts of sake (the kind we had was advertised as “peculiar in taste” – how can one not order that?) The meal was finished with green tea and a red bean pancake with red bean and black sesame ice cream. Best thing about the meal was both the price and the leisurely pace that the food came out. Highly recommended.

I went back to Starbucks today for my green tea latte. I pulled up to the drive thru speaker and ordered with confidence this time.

Me: “One tall green tea latte please with an extra shot!”

Barista: “Extra shot? Of what? There are no extra shots in a green tea latte!”

Me: “Oh. I’m confused. Because yesterday I said I wanted a green tea latte but would like it stronger and the barista told me to ask for an extra shot.”

Barista: “Extra shot? Silly man. You don’t ask for an extra shot in a green tea. You can ask for more powder. But not an extra shot. Shots refer to espresso.

Me: “Ok. Thanks. I appreciate the clarification.”

I pull up to the window to pick up my beverage.

Me: “I feel humiliated. This can be very intimidating.”

Barista: “Don’t feel humiliated beverage ignoramus.”

Me: “I hate myself.”

Barista: “You have a cute baby.”

Me: “Thank you. I hope she doesn’t remember this.”

Looking forward to going out with the lady tonight. Problem is we are beat. I wanted to catch a movie, but staying awake might be somewhat problematic. Too bad I can’t interest Ziva in 30 Days of Night or Saw IV. Thai food is definitely going to happen and perhaps a delicious Thai ice tea will give me the boost I need.

In other news, you know a show really sucks when the creator apologizes for the first eight episodes.

I completely support the television strike and I am thankful for it as well. I have about 15 episodes of “My Name is Earl” to catch up on. As well as the entire season of Mad Men. My DVR is backed up with tons of movies as well. First on the list will be From Dusk to Dawn II. Only because its stars Bruce Campbell.

We all suspected it, but it looks like we finally got confirmation that American Idol finalist Elliot Yamin is a bonafide MOT (Member of the Tribe). Yes, I watch American Idol and I’m not ashamed to say it. This household has been a solid Yamin fan since we heard him sing Moody’s Mood for Love. Such control that boy has! Anyway, rumors of his genetic love of smoked fish have been circulating on the interweb for weeks. I’ve read that his father is an Iraqi Jew from Israel, and that Elliott’s real name is Ephraim.

According to EW’s Popwatch there is an email being circulated by the executive director of Richmond Virginia’s JCC urging Jews to vote for Yamin. While, I would never vote for someone just because they are a Jew (Arlen Spector Boo!) I support Yamin because he is the most talented contestant in American Idol history.

I am a proud Yaminion. Let’s hope he doesn’t get voted off tonight!

UPDATE: I wanted to respond to the comments up here on the blog.

Haven’t seen last night’s episode yet. I’ll catch the 7:00 repeat on Star World (the only two shows I watch on Star are AI and Koffee With Karan. Man, those Bollywood babes are HOT!) Don’t get me wrong, Chris is really good, cept everything he does sounds like Fuel song. And frankly, I don’t like Fuel. And he covered Creed for goodness sakes. Creed! God helps us all. Or at least God help Chris. Because he is really into God. He used to sing about him in a Christian rock band. However, it would be fun to watch Chris win and then get a nasty cocaine habit, become obsessed with whore, leave his wife and blame the entire thing on American Idol. That would be rock and roll!

Taylor is great. I thought his performance of “Play that Funky Music” was amazing, it had us in stitches, but good ole Hicks can get annoying at times. And I didn’t like that Beatles stunt he pulled on the Billboard hits show last week. That was cheap (although his performance was good). I think Simon’s “drunk guy at a wedding” comment was pretty much spot on. I’ve been that guy before and people have told me I was pretty annoying (but never pitchy). I do have to admit however that his rendition of “Trouble” by Ray LaMontagne was quite moving. As a premature grey-haired man, one might think that it’s natural for me support Hicks, but the act got old real quick.

I think McPhee is overrated and kind of sucks. I’m definitely not a McPhan. She was good in the beginning when she was all bluesy and shit but now she just sounds like any oversinger of American Idol past. And also, she never owns the songs she sings. No emotional resonance whatsoever. That’s what I find appealing about Yamin, when he sings, he really connects with the songs. Damn, I should have started an American Idol blog.

DOUBLE UPDATE: WOW! McPhee was horrible and she forgot the words! And she looked like she was taking a poop on the stage! Pickler and Bucky used to do the poop move all the time! I hate the poop move!

Listen to an interview with Weissfeld recorded last Passover over at the Israelisms podcast.
